Interests Versus Personality

Growing up as a girl I remember being told by several mentors and role models that because I was a girl, I would have greater struggles in life. Some of these said struggles were small, like I wouldn't be able to run as fast as the boys in my gym class, but others were impacting such as, I would struggle in the work place because either my intelligence wouldn't be valued or my body could be distracting.

Now, simply as a sixteen year old girl I see little truth and much deceit in these words. For example, I don't feel any less in my classes when stating my opinion or proving a boy wrong. At the same time, I've seen several girls flaunt their "goods" and I'll have to admit it can be distracting to any human being not just men.

On the other hand, as an educated girl who's interest range from literature to operas and culture to travel, I must admit it is hard to find people my age with similar interest. I wrote a similar post that portrayed a more negative aspect with stories of being bullied and feeling like an outcast. This is not what I'm trying to say. I'm just trying to see if any you, my wonderful readers, feel it is hard to relate to other young teens.

With all the social media encompassing our generation, it's hard not to know what someone likes. There are the people who enjoy popularity and fitting in, there are people who enjoy drinking and smoking, there are people who enjoy relationships and sex, there are people who enjoy sports and prom. And then there are the people who enjoy art, literature, history, and education. The rare and few kids that appreciate life and living. But I guess life is all relative.

My point is that although I've always struggled making friends merely on personality types meshing, I've come to realize that the reason I've struggled making friends in high school is because of interests. Although I have my wonderful friends in Middle College, from Rossview, and random friends from my previous schools, I always find it hard to connect. My most recent friends, Channel and Emilia are always making fun of me (in a good way) about how much I enjoy books, music, art, history, school, and organization. It's actually quiet odd how our three-way friendship worked out, but I'm grateful it did.

I love my friends and honestly I'm so extremely different from most of them interest-wise, I've come to realize it's because my friends and I all have the same personality-type, the same general outlooks on life, the same principles. I think that's what matters most.

Comment down below what your interests include! :)

  1. I agree completely. I love books and art and don't have that many friends because people think i'm odd or too "grown up". I love your blog! Thanks for the inspiration! <3

    1. I hope you keep reading and enjoying art, you'll find people who love and enjoy the same things soon enough! Don't be worried about be "too grown up" either, I've always been seen the same way. Thank for reading! :)
