Stay Positive

In the past couple months I realized that I was a very negative person and I was consumed with negativity. It affected a lot of aspects in my life such as my mood, my perspective, and even my relationships. I was constantly grumpy, upset or angry. I would complain about every possible thing in my life, nothing was ever good enough. I lost several friendships, not solely because of my negativity but it did play a critical factor. I had a sour relationship with my family. It was more than unhealthy, it was devastating. I didn't want to be constantly upset, annoyed, or unhappy. I decided I need to make a change. Life is too short to be surrounded by negativity, so here are a few things that helped me stay positive and happy.

1. You are your friends
I remember hearing, and possibly reading somewhere, that you are a combination of the top five people you spend your time with. Usually this means your friends and sometimes even your family. I had a couple very negative and toxic relationships that I had to cut off. It hurt at first, it's not easy letting someone go out of your life, but sometimes it's for the better. And it was. Negative people influence you and hold you back.

2. Buddy system
Find people that will work, study, or exercise with you. They will encourage and motivate you, you'll each learn from each other's mistakes and keep a positive atmosphere around you while doing so.

3. Your responsibility, your outcome
The way we respond to negativity is our choice. It's all up to you.

4. Relax about what's not in your control
If you realistically can not do anything about the matter, push it out of your mind and carry on. Sometimes things will just happen, life will happen, and there's nothing you can do about it. Everything happens for a reason and one day you'll see it.

5. Rejection and criticism do not define who you are
Know your worth and who you are. Someone else's opinion of you does not make or break you. You do that all on your own. Keep your head up high and don't let other's opinions or ideas about who you are get to you, use it to better yourself.

6. Expand your horizons
Try something new every day. Try different routines and plans. Learn what suits you and get to know yourself. You don't need to travel to exotic places or spend tons of money to try new things. Read a new book of a different genre you're used to, look up a recipe or make up your own, explore your own town, the list is endless!

7. Keep an open mind
Relating to tip #6, you have to remember that not everyone will think the way you think or see things from the same perspective. This doesn't make other opinions wrong, just different. People grow up differently, have different backgrounds, are from different cultures. It'd be boring if we all thought and liked the same things, wouldn't it? Meeting new people with new mindsets can be fascinating and intriguing, take it as a learning experience. You might even find ideas or concepts to incorporate into your life.

8. Make goals and focus on them
Try to spend half of your time serving your goals. Dedication, hard work, and passion will get you places. Don't be so quick to give up and stop worrying about things being done perfectly, nothing is perfect.  Keep an "I will" mentality, don't allow insecurity to creep in.

9. Ambition
Happiness is relative. If you're happy with who you are, with your success, with your life, that's ultimately what matters. Stay ambitious and surround yourself with positive, ambitious people.
